Hi there, this is a E-commerce website project I am testing, wanted to see if with a bit work it's able to design an online shopping store using new google sites which is free to use with standard service and business account users.
Google sites is an easy to use online software however, it does have its' quirks , saying that with patience and some fore-thought you can create some very good interesting user friendly website pages.
BY ADDING VARIOUS BACKGROUND IMAGES YOU CAN FLASH-UP YOUR DESIGNS . BACKGOUND IMAGES ARE FULL WIDTH ON DESKTOP
According to accessibility laws it is a requirement that all images on a website should use descriptive Alt tags . Unfortunately with Google site there's no automatic way to add this in a media store, every image would need to be done separately.
Nothing, same with all websites if you want to use your own domain name you will need to need to pay at small fee for it. Adding a “.com” can easy be bought from *Namecheap.com for $10-$20 . However, unlike other websites with Google sites there is no 'premium fee' to connect to it .

This project is about to see if it's possible to use Google sites for it's main store front design rather than using a embed store like Ecwid which displays everything inside on single iframe , Ecwid is limited to ten items for their free subscription. This project is building everything from scratch. Google sites has NO inbuilt E-commerce store features , however using embed custom add-ons for functions like shopping cart, buy it now and process payments is it possible to have e-commerce functionality. This makes it very suitable for stores that have 1-100 products or even unlimited products if you got time to manage admin and back end functionality .
What you see is what you get , so for all the behind the scenes stuff you would need your own third party software to keep track on things, this could be done freely by using google sheets as a data base to store transaction info and product stock info . There are a number of google app scripts available on the internet with few tweaks will help keep things automated even if you use Microsoft Office offerings Power Automate can help integrate things.
The above section custom background image was made with free software :- Inkscape
If your are willing to put some work in you could make a small E-commerce website work. Certainly many options on the designing store front .
If you are wishing to begin a small online business Google sites is free to use, with some DIY skills and a time google sites certainly could be a option for a no money start-up. Make no mistake using Google sites does have it limitations.
First of all you will need to register your site via Google console and grab analytics code. At present there is no way of adding other meta data Search engines starts reading content from the top and scan the rest for relevant content the displayed result is usually from the first paragraph. By carefully adding meaningful keywords in to the top section of all your pages you can help your website to get noticed. Ideally you try should structure your product items into categories, adding their keywords into descriptions and image alt tags. Maybe define a dedicated text section within every shop and product pages so search bots recognise when read Below example uses sub-heading tag for the word category
You will most definitely need to have some type of user friendly menu linking to all the categories and your product items pages so they can be purchased.
